12 April, 1390. Rhodes.
Fr. Pierre de Culan, marshal and lieutenantof the master on Rhodes, and the convent to the Master Fr. Juan Fernández de Herédia and the princes and lords of Europe: informs about the situation of the order and about Smyrna. They ask for money and every kind of support, maybe at the expense of the properties of the order. They empower the Admiral Fr. Palamedo di Giovanni and Fr Renaud de Giresme, the Prior of Francia. Pope Clement VII grants an indulgence for the defence of Smyrna and the protection of the Latin territories in the Eastern Mediterranean, to be collected by the Hospitallers. Master Fr. Juan Fernández de Herédia to the Prior of Auvergne, Fr. Robert de Chateauneuf [and other officials]: informs him about the situation of the Convent and of Smyrna; invitation to an assembly in Avignon for 30 August. Pope Clement VII confirms the decisions of an assembly of the Hospitallers at Avignon concerning e.g. the payments of the Western and Eastern houses of the order (10.000 and 1.200 fl) to support the Convent and Smyrna.
