Several decisions for the defence of Rhodes. […] Ex variis partibus habentur nova, quod Turcorum tyrannus Solyman preparat magnam classem maritimam et Constantinopoli publice divulgetur, quod est contra Rhodum, reverendissimus dominus magnus magister et reverendum consilium cupientes providere statui religionis fecerunt ordinationes infrascriptis:
- two new commissioners were appointed for two months to look for repairs in the town, the Portuguese fr. Antonio de Brito and fr. François de Nuceres from Aquitaine who are ordered to have repairs made where necessary and to be present themselves during the works;
- since the situation makes it necessary to employ a larger work force, at least three quarters of the Muslim slaves which were not serving in the houses should participate at the work at the walls, who had to be supervised by two brethren of the Order; for this, the ‘master of the esquires’ (magister scutiferum) should appeal both to the brethren as well as to the citizens and inhabitants of Rhodes to give the names and the numbers of their slaves who could take part at the works according to the decision;
- two brethren should take measures to prevent fires in the town;
- fr. Jean Marini and fr. Nicholas Fairfax - together with the Latin and Greek inhabitants - have to care of the peasants of the island who should come to Rhodes town in case of an attack on the island;
- two brethren have to inspect the mills and order repairs or new buildings so that the mills could also be used for the defence of the town;

Georg Selin [?], and the Castellan of Rhodos: informs them that the bailiff of Morea has claimed the position of a constable for the Castle of St Peter which was vacant and is now granted to fr. Gonsalvo Pimenta. There is also another vacancy. Bernadino de Ayrasca, Admiral and Captain of the Castle of Saint Peter: according to the statutes, the Grand Bailiff has to visit the Castle of St Peter, and last year, a list of artillery and ammunition in the Castle had been compiled. Melchior Kretschmer, appointed judge (gesatzter richter), and the sworn jurors of the town of Złotoryja (Goltperg) testify that Bernard Bronig (Bronigk) sold 1/2 mark of his annual rent from his suburban manor farm (forwerg) to the Hospitallers in Złotoryja for 5 mark of Bohemian groats in form of the so-called pittance (piadancia). The rent is payable at Pentecost and can be bought back. Master Fr. Philippe Villiers de l‘Isle-Adam to Cardinal Wolsey: since his arrival in Rhodes, he has sent news from the East. One of his spies returning from Constantinople which he left 12 days ago reports on a great armament that is being prepared by the Turks, against the Order. Though this could not be verified, the Grand Master ordered to lay in provisions, to strengthen the weak parts of the town and to send out vessels with letters to the member of the Order in the West, if they were attacked. For the Hospitallers, the King is now the chief hope. The brethren had already be ordered to organize ships and to come to Rhodes. - Original [?]. [Grand Master] fr. Philippe [Villiers de l’Isle-Adam] to fr. Giorgio Adorno from the Italian langue: fr. Carolo de Jesualdo capitular bailiff of St Stephano has complained that fr. Giorgio has irregularly occupied the preceptory de la Palude in the Priory of Capua. Fr. Philippe [Villiers de l’Isle-Adam]: makes known that the Sultan (Turcorum tyrannus) is gathering a great fleet to subdue the neighbouring Christians, but the Order is be prepared and vigilant. Vincent Raussendorf (Rawssindorff) at Płakowice (Plackwitz) bequeaths, with the consent of King Louis and the master of the Order of St. John in Bohemia and Poland, John of Rosenberg, all his property in Plakowice to commander Wolfgang Senner and the convent of the commandery in Lwówek (Lemberg); also two pieces of a field by the river Bóbru, which the commander bought and Vincent held as a fief, and a meadow near Płakowice between the meadows of (Matthias) Feyg and Thomas Engemann, will belong to the commandery after Vincent's death. The Hospitallers are to celebrate annual devotions for the souls of the members of the family. James Gerttner, the town scribe in Świdnica (Schweydnitz), is appointed executor of the will. Order of Grand Master and Council to fr. Dideric del Aquila und the Grand Preceptor fr. Gabriel de Pomerolx as head of the auberge of the Provence to organize the musters: should summon all brothers of the langue of Provence, bailiffs, knights, and sergeants to come personally to the auberge with their offensive and defensive weapons, armour, crossbows, and English bows; they should make a list of the brethren who were present in the convent but did not show up to the musters; the brethren present should swear with their right hand on the cross of their habits that the weapons brought by them were their own; the whole mustering would start after the bells had been rung for the event; all participants of the muster had to be noted down in a list, together with their equipment of weapons. Vincent Raussendorf (Rawssindorff) at Płakowice sells to the commander Wolfgang Senner in Lwówek 2 pieces of a field near the Bóbr river, which he bought from Nicholas Gossner and the court shoemaker (hoffschuster) John, with a fief right which he received from the King, and a meadow by the stone bridge on the road to Płakowice between the meadows of Matthias (Mattis) Feyg and Thomas Engemann for 23 mark of an annual rent, to be paid always on St. John the Baptist and at Christmas, 11 1/2 marks each. fr. Villiers informs the Council that the Turkish fleet has been laying for some days in front of the Isle of Symi but now could be expected daily to arrive at Rhodes and that the Turkish army would land on the island to lay siege on the town of Rhodes. This had been announced by Soliman I in his letter of 1 June 1522, still from Constantinople. Because of the daily expenses to prepare for the siege and for the supplies for the mercenaries additional monies had to be provided. and the treasury had to be transferred to a safer place to be protected from the artillery of the enemy. Thus, it was decided to take out 20,000 ducats and to bring the remaining money and treasures to the sacristy or another safe place inside the town. (NLM, Arch. 83, fol. 52(61)v-53(62)r)

Vincent Raussendorf (Rawssindorff) at Płakowice (Plackwitz) makes a will in which, with the consent of his wife and John of Rosenberg, master of the Order of St. John in Bohemia, Poland, Silesia, etc., he bequeaths all his property in Płakowice, as well as the part bought from his brothers Christopher and John Raussendorf, to commander Wolfgang Senner and the commandery in Lwówek (Lewinberg). The Hospitallers were to pay him 23 mark annually on two dates (Christmas and St. John the Baptist), to provide his widow with accomodation and food after his death, to pay out his brothers Christopher and John and three sisters 50 Rhenish gld., and to hold vigils and memorial services for the Raussendorf family 4 times a year on all Ember days. The Franciscans in Lwówek are to be paid 3 mark annually for the celebration of masses, and 7 mark worth of bread is to be distributed to the poor from the religious confraternities and hospitals. Vincent reserves for himself for life the income from the village of Górna (Obirdorffe). Note on the celebration of the feast of the Immaculate Conception by the Order, Grand Master and Council on 9 December 1522. Human powers would not be enough to defend Rhodes; therefore, the brethren prayed to St. Mary for help. Vice-chancellor Bartolomeo Poliziano was ordered by Grand Master and Council to put down in writing that the Order would build a special shrine for St. Mary if they would keep the town.
